Graveside services for Betty Jean (Meyers) Hassell, 95, of Gainesville, will be privately held at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Larry Kremling and Rev. Hollis Parsons officiating.
Mrs. Hassell passed away on August 10, 2025 in Gainesville.
Betty was born January 20, 1930, in Gainesville, Texas to Seraphine Casper, Sr. and Lee (Wilson) Meyers. She was raised in Gainesville and married Harold Hassell on June 14, 1947. Together, they made their home in Gainesville and raised three children: Dale, Louise, and Paul.
Betty obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Woman’s University as a non-traditional student. Upon graduation she taught Home Economics at Callisburg High School for many years until her retirement in the 1990’s.
Mrs. Hassell was a talented seamstress and quilter, spending many hours each week in her sewing room. She and Harold resided on their farm for many years, raising cattle and other livestock as well as gardening. One of her other passions was working in her yard, growing flowers and was proud to win “Yard of the Week”. Betty was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Gainesville.
Survivors include: son Dale Hassell of Callisburg; daughter Louise (Hassell) Ott and husband John of Decorah, Iowa; son Paul Hassell and wife Jeri of Denison; grandchildren Chris Hassell (Heather) of Orlando, Florida, Mindy Muellenborn (Michael) of Denison, Benjamin Ott (Laurie) of Hammonton, New Jersey, Robert Ott (Colette) of Wilmington, Delaware, granddaughter-in-law Edelweiss Hassell of Denison; great-grandchildren, Morgan Hassell, Erin Hassell, Cooper Hassell, Conner Hassell, Remy Ott, Genevieve Ott, Felix Ott, Brayden Ott, Alexander Ott, Evelyn Ott, and Kyler Ott.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Harold Hassell in 2000; her parents Seraphine and Lee Meyers; her grandson Jacob Hassell; her daughter-in-law Carolyn Hassell; her brother Seraphine Jr.; sister-in-law Joyce Meyers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Noah’s Ark, Three Oaks Hospice in Denton or Second Time Around, First United Methodist Church Gainesville.
