Dainah Gregory, 95, of Gainesville, passed away September 27, 2021 in Gainesville.
Dainah was born at home on November 3, 1925 in Lois, TX, just outside of Valley View. She graduated from Durant High School (OK), and also lived in Wichita Falls, before moving to Gainesville where she resided for 73 years. Mrs. Gregory began work as a secretary for Cecil B. Newland in 1948 and became a business partner through the years, eventually becoming sole owner of Newland Furniture in 1976. She was joined in business by her son, Mark R. Gregory, in 1981. Mrs. Gregory operated Newland Furniture 6 days a week for 73 years until restricted by the events of March 2020.
Mrs. Gregory was an avid seamstress, maintaining and operating a commercial drapery sewing room for over 50 years. She was also a life member of VFW Post 1922 where she held numerous positions through the years, a member of Temple Baptist Church, Soroptimist Club, and the ‘49ers Square Dance Club. Mrs. Gregory was also an active bowler for over 30 years.
Survivors include: son, Mark R. Gregory and wife, Tammy of Gainesville; grandchildren: Christi Cheaney, Gretchen Gregory and husband, Mike Garcia, Charli Lee and husband, Brandon, Chloe Gregory and fiancé, Trevor Lima, and Caitlyn Gregory; great-grandchildren: Addyson Moore, Sunday Cheaney, Gavin Garcia, and Sailor Gregory; sister, Edna Cole and husband, Johnny of Mansfield; sister, Peggy Poage of Grand Prairie; brother, Bill Sluder of Grand Prairie; sister-in-law, Nona Sluder of Gainesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by: parents, Edward Lee and Myrtle Marie (Wilkinson) Sluder; husband, Bob Gregory; sister, Betty Keisler; sister, Faye Hilliard; brother, Jim Sluder; sister-in-law, Jean Sluder; brother-in-law, Bernard Keisler; brother-in-law, William “Bill” Hilliard; brother-in-law, James Poage; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Rex and Christine Crow, Tommy and Marie Henderson, and Jack and Margaret Lester.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 1, at the funeral home, with Dr. Eddie Chenault officiating. A committal service will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 1922 Auxiliary.
