A mass of Christian burial for Elsie Marie (Popp) Hess, 78, of Lindsay is scheduled 10:00 AM Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsay with Rev. Matthew Tatyrek officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Lindsay. Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Geo. J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home in Gainesville followed by visitation.
Elsie passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at her home with family by her side. Elsie Marie Hess was born north of Lindsay on April 26, 1940 to Frank Joseph and Anna (Neises) Popp.
She was taught by her Uncle John at a young age how to work in the fields and received her driver’s license early to be able to drive the farm truck to the grainery in Gainesville. She attended St. Mary’s and Lindsay schools, graduating from Lindsay High School in 1958. Elsie met Julius Hess, the summer of 1958 and they married September 26, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gainesville. In 1975, they built their home on the “Old Popp Place” north of Lindsay.
She loved the outdoors and spending time with family. She enjoyed having a large vegetable garden, canning and fishing. Over the years, she mastered many crafts including ceramics, knitting and making photo albums. She shared her talents with many friends and family. Several of her ceramic Christmas trees have become family traditions for others. She enjoyed playing 42 and 84 with friends for many years.
Elsie is survived by her husband Julius; daughter Joy Summerlin; son Eric Hess and his wife Sherry; and daughter Gina Sharp and her husband David; grandchildren Shelby Ratterree and husband Hunter, Josh Hess, AJ Summerlin, Ryan Sharp, and Emily Sharp; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Lyndall Popp, Thecla Gossett, Rita Bode, Henry Popp, and son-in-law Russ Summerlin.
Pallbearers are Rudy Hess, Chris Hundt, Shane Berend, Frank Popp, Doug Gossett, Hank Schumacher, Hank Huchton, and Sam Hellinger.
Memorial contributions may be made to Home Hospice of Cooke County.
