Floyd Akins, age 81, went to be with the Lord May 11, 2025. Floyd was born June 5, 1943 to James Henry Akins and Margie Hardin Brown in Dallas, Texas. He grew up in the Field City area of Dallas and attended Thomas Jefferson High School.
Floyd worked in the construction industry throughout life, having learned the trade from his father, uncles, and other family. At age 20, he began contracting to build custom homes and worked in the Highland Park area doing new constructions and remodels for the next 10-15 years. In 1981, the family moved to Denton County and to Cooke County in 1982. He began his commercial construction career working for his brother William at A&R Construction and later for Jess Cason at BJ Contractors. He started Pharlap Construction, Inc. in 1994 which he ran with his wife, Judy until his retirement in 2016.
Floyd thrived in his work and was always devoted to his family above all else. He enjoyed big family get-togethers, his church, his two dogs, camping, boating, fishing, music, gardening, travel, and, not least, his motorcycle. He has remained very close to his siblings and many of his cousins. His was a life well lived.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judy, his two children Richard Akins and his wife, Ginger of Krugerville, Texas and Natalie Akins of Sherman Texas and two stepchildren Stacey Dvoracek and Russell Gipson of Pilot Point, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Akins and Margie Hardin Brown, His older brother William Akins, his younger brother, Jack Akins, his brother-in-law James Brecheen and his beloved grandson Kyle Shugart. He is also survived by two brothers, Michael Akins and his wife Melva of Gainesville and Bill Henry Akins and wife Lisa of Whitesboro. Other surviving family include four sisters, Brenda Mahon and Eddie of Georgetown, Texas, Linda Brecheen of Denton, Texas Glenda Carley and Jim of Bedford, Texas and Connie Mullins of Fort Worth, Texas, seven grandchildren, Amanda Shugart, Crystal Turner, Casey Blair, Dusty Dvoracek, Drew Dvoracek, Matthew Dvoracek, and Livia Dvoracek, as well as ten great grandchildren. He was much loved and will be missed by his family and many many friends.
Floyd and Judy are members of Cooke County Cowboy Church on Highway 82 in Gainesville. A celebration of life for Floyd will be held at the church on Thursday, May 15, beginning around 12:45 PM, following a lunch that begins at noon.
