George Allen Sparkman, 90, of Gainesville, Texas passed away December 16, 2025 in Gainesville.
George was born August 13, 1935 in Denton, Texas. He was a member of the final class at Post Oak School in Post Oak, Texas and graduated from Midway High School in Clay County. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from Midwestern State University in 1957. George married Norma Jean Hinkson on July 29, 1955 in Wichita Falls, Texas. While serving in the Texas National Guard, George and Jeanie's family began to grow. During his early career with U.S. Soil Conservation Service and U.S. Farmers Home Administration, Robbie, Tina, and Doug were born. Terri and Greg were added to the family as he transitioned to a rewarding career as a rural banker supporting local farmers in Lamesa, Lockney, and other small towns across Texas. He finished his career with the FDIC from the late 1980s until he retired to Gainesville, Texas in 2002.
George and Jeanie were committed to raising their children with a deep Christian faith, a respect for hard work, and the treasure of family and friends. He supported his kids in music education, agriculture endeavors, academic pursuits, missions trips, family vacations, and a host of family, school, and community activities. He committed to giving each of his children the opportunity to attend university, and encouraged each in their career choices.
Throughout his life, George remained connected to the farming and ranching business. When he retired, he returned to buying, grazing, and selling cattle on his land in Post Oak. At different times he was involved local civic and school organizations, and was always devoted to his church. The Sparkmans helped plant churches in Illinois, Massachusetts, and Texas, and he most recently called Calvary Baptist Church in Gainesville his home.
George enjoyed days spent with his family and friends, and caring for livestock. His last moments were spent working in his pasture with his son. He touched many lives through his kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity, and he will be missed.
George was preceded in death by his wife Norma Jean Sparkman, his parents D.C "Slim" Sparkman and Jimmie Sparkman, sister Sandra Alexander, brothers Cecil Sparkman and Bob Sparkman, Jeanie’s parents and siblings Ernest and Faye Hinkson, Robert and Glenda Hinkson, and Tom Hinkson.
