Gerald Winston Mitchell

Gerald Winston Mitchell, 77, of Gainesville, Texas, passed away September 8, 2026, at Pecan Tree Rehab and Healthcare Center in Gainesville.

Gerald was born May 13, 1949, in Melissa, Texas, to Winifred and Mary Mitchell. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Lowry, on September 6, 1974, and they welcomed their daughter, Melissa, in April, 1976. Gerald was a loving and devoted husband to Dorothy, and he patiently and gently nursed her through her illness until her death in 1980. From then on, he devoted his life to single-handedly raising Melissa, who was the joy of his life.

Gerald supported his family by being a carpenter and house painter. He enjoyed time outdoors and the beauty of nature, including sunsets and the colors of the leaves in the Fall. He was a very artistic soul – throughout his life he enjoyed taking nature photography, he wrote poems and stories, drew and painted beautiful pictures, and was a very talented, self-taught musician who played with many local groups and bands throughout the years.

Gerald is predeceased by his parents, Winifred and Mary Mitchell; his brother, Carlton Mitchell; his sister, Linda Phelps; and his wife, Dorothy.

 Gerald is survived by his daughter, Melissa West and husband Johnny; his grandson, Slayter West, of whom he was so very proud; his siblings, Wanda Perry and husband, Bobby; Eunice Graves; Lou Nolen and husband, Dewain; Benny Mitchell; and Marty Mitchell and wife, Lavonna; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at George J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 1:00 pm with the service immediately following at 2:00 pm, officiated by nephew, Landon Nolen. Gerald will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro.
