Jayne Banks Austin

Born in Durant, Oklahoma on February 14, 1931, to M.L. Banks and Lela Robinett, Miss Jayne peacefully departed this earth on August 3, 2026 in Granbury, Texas having lived a long, productive and meaningful life.

Jayne was preceded in death by her husband Marcus William Austin and her only child, Kim Banks Austin, as well as her brother Bob L. Banks and sister-in-law Gloria Stinson Banks. She is survived by her niece San Dee Banks Sheftall, nephews Bix Banks, and Bart Banks, all of Greenville, South Carolina, her special friend Sam Houston, as well as several great nieces and nephews, numerous friends and hundreds of former students.

Miss Jayne graduated from Durant High School (Okla) and continued her education at Southwest State College where she received both a B.A. and a master’s degree in music. She worked as an elementary school music teacher for the Gainesville ISD (Texas) for many years and was a member of the GISD Educators Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Whaley Methodist Church as well as the long-time choir director. She was also a member of the Gainesville Community Circus.

Miss Jayne was known for her strong will, her love of children and music, serving her community, and her faith. She loved the Dallas Mavericks, her community, the piano, singing, and being of service to others. She was loved and respected and will be missed by many.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 6th at 9am, at the George Carroll Funeral Home in Gainesville, with services immediately following at 10am. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville.
