Jimmy F. Raney

Jim Raney, 88, longtime resident of Rosston, most recently residing in Pflugerville, passed away June 21, 2025 in Round Rock.

Jim was born October 26, 1936 in Rosston. He attended Era schools and joined the U.S. Air Force. While serving, Jim married Mary Ellen Townsend on June 9, 1956. Following his service, Mr. Raney graduated from East Texas State University and eventually earned his Master’s degree as well. Mr. Raney was a hard worker who possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. He worked at Del Monte for many years in South Texas before relocating back home. While raising children he worked numerous jobs, including National Supply. For many years he farmed his land and eventually purchased The General Store in Forestburg with his wife. The couple loved to travel and enjoyed being a part of the horse racing community. Mr. Raney was a faithful member of the Rosston Baptist Church and involved member of his community. He will be missed.

Predeceased by: wife Mary Ellen Raney; parents Forrest and Angie (Links) Raney; daughter Debbie Berman and husband Patrick; sisters Dorothy, Shirley, and Helen; and brothers Sam, Ed, Roy, and Clay.

Survived by: daughter Patricia Diane Raney of Norman, OK; son Jimmy F. Raney, II and wife Candi of Saint Jo; daughter Julie Marshall and husband Donald of Pflugerville; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Billie, Evelyn, and Sue; brother Cecil; sister-in-law Shirley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 25, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home, Gainesville. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, at First Rosston Church, Rosston. A committal service will follow at Rosston Cemetery. Mr. Raney’s grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.
