John D. Nicholson

John David Nicholson, affectionately known as Poppa John, passed away September 23, 2026, in Whitesboro, TX at the age of 80.

John was born in Gainesville, Texas to Ralph and Marie Nicholson, brother Gene and sister Shirley (Bob) Eggleston. John graduated from Gainesville High in 1964. He married Jo Ann Dillard on November 11, 1966, at Grand Avenue Baptist Church. Together they raised three children, Cheryl Ann Shauf, William Brian Nicholson, and Michael Wayne Nicholson. Johnny worked at General Dynamics, Gainesville Daily Register, National Supply, National Oilwell, and MCII during his career, and after retirement, at WinStar Casino. He loved working at the Register and National Supply and made many close lifelong friends.

Survived by wife of 59 years Jo Ann Nicholson; daughter Cheryl Ann Shauf (Chad), sons William Brian Nicholson (Jenny), Michael Wayne Nicholson, grandchildren: Casey John Shauf, Chance Shauf (Madelyn), Chad Shauf Jr (Marti Yousko), Addison Grace Nicholson and Wyatt Matthew Nicholson. Great –grandchild Everleigh Marie Shauf, Cousin Lonna Sue Gillin and Brother-in-law Bob Dillard (Annie).

We know he is in heaven watching over us. He will forever be missed. A celebration of life to come...
