Kimmy Key, affectionately known as “Big Pappa,” passed away on May 8, 2025, in Gainesville, Texas, at the age of 65. Born on December 31, 1959, in Brownsville, Kentucky, Kimmy was raised in a loving community where he attended East Hardin High School before furthering his education with a basketball scholarship at North Central Texas College, where he earned his Associates degree.
Kimmy dedicated many years of his life to working as a machinist for Texas Instruments and Raytheon, where he took immense pride in his contributions to his field, reflecting his deep sense of patriotism and commitment to his work. He was a gentle giant, admired by many for his kind heart and generous spirit. Known for his strong faith, he believed fervently in the power of prayer, principles that guided him throughout his life.
He will be remembered fondly not only for his professional achievements but also for being an exceptional father and grandfather. Kimmy was the best Dad to his children and a cherished Papaw to his grandchildren. His legacy of love and warmth will remembered fondly by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Kimmy is survived by his daughter, Katherine “Katie” Key Montgomery and her husband Ryan of Gainesville, Texas and their sons, Jax and Jacob and Kelly Key and his partner Melanie Rosenbaum of Denton, Texas; the mother of his children, Laura Key; his sister, Markita Conner and her husband Steve; his brother, Jeffery Key and his wife Mary; his sister, Cecilia “Penguin” Williams and her husband Tommy; and his brother, Maj. Kyle Key. He is also survived by his aunt, Janice McCombs, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Cecil Newton Key and Barbara Shirley (McCombs) Key, along with numerous aunts and uncles.
A funeral service to honor Kimmy’s life will be held on May 16, 2025, at Geo. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas, starting at 11:00 AM, with interment following at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Argyle, Texas.
