Mergie Lee (Landgraf) Farr, 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 21, 2025.
Mergie was born on a farm west of Madill, OK to Roy Lee Landgraf and Tennie Rutherford Landgraf on September 24, 1936. She was the oldest of seven children. On March 31, 1956, she married Billy P. Farr. Bill and Mergie lived in Abilene, TX while Bill completed college followed by a stint in Fort Worth, TX (Crowley) while Bill attended seminary. After Bill’s brother was killed in a farm accident, they moved southeast of Gainesville, TX to take over running the family farm. In the late 1980s, they moved to a spread in Oklahoma on the banks of the Red River. They eventually moved to a ranch west of Hugo, OK.
Mergie loved Jesus Christ because she believed in His love for her through His death and payment for her sins on the cross. She set a wonderful Christian example of loving and fearing the Lord and walking by faith. With Bill ever by her side for their 62 years of marriage, the pair worshipped the Lord in church devotedly throughout the years, sang in the choir, as well as read the Bible to each other every night. She continued to serve and follow Christ after Bill went to his heavenly home, looking ahead to the day they would be reunited.
Mergie was a dedicated wife and mother, raising four children while working in the fields alongside Bill, helping manage the farming and ranching business, taking care of all aspects of the home as well as hand preparing three meals a day for her family, day in and day out. She grew the most amazing gardens and diligently canned and froze the produce to feed her family throughout the Winter. Mergie was a fabulous cook. For over 50 years, she made sourdough bread every week using a starter her friend had given her; this was a family favorite. She would do without to make sure the family had what they needed and had an uncanny ability to take nothing and turn it into something – a true testament of survival. Mergie was a survivor, as she had several major accidents, including crushing her pelvis and chest, yet she always soldiered on. She was a proficient crocheter and seamstress, and enjoyed making clothing, like matching Easter dresses for herself and her daughters. Notably, Mergie made sure to share and teach her talents with her family and friends. She would comment that she had peace knowing that no matter what, her children and grandchildren could feed and clothe themselves. She was an incredibly hard worker, but she also knew when to slow down and enjoy those around her. She loved games of all sorts, especially any chance to play “42” (dominoes).
Mergie truly loved spending time in God’s creation, especially when hunting and fishing. She had many adventures fishing on the Red River and ponds dotted throughout the farms and ranches she called home. She even won a contest by killing a 19-point buck Whitetail Deer. It was tradition for her to go squirrel hunting on her birthday each year, after which fried squirrel, homemade biscuits, and gravy was served for her special dinner. She also really loved to hunt for arrowheads; her eye could spot one while driving a tractor, generally stopping to pick it up before getting back to work.
After Bill’s death in 2017, Mergie moved back to Lake Kiowa, TX to be closer to family.
Mergie is survived by her children Ramona Tyler (Rod) of Gainesville, TX, Brenda Amyx (Curtis) of Nocona, TX, Phyllis Coffey (Jimmie Dean) of Springville, IN, and Calvin Farr (Deanna) of Callisburg, TX; grandchildren Dalinda Damm (Phil) of Savery, WY; Christa Barlow (Jarrod) of Springville, IN; and Cody Coffey (Emily) of Springville, IN; great-grandchildren Landon Barlow, Morgan Damm, Reid Damm, Charlotte Coffey, and Laryn Barlow; sister Lydia Gumm (Charles); sister-in-law Tammy Landgraf; brothers-in-law Harold O’Steen and Terry Eldridge; 17 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
