Ramona Odetta Sharp

Ramona O. Sharp went home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in Gainesville, Texas. She was born in Comanche County, Texas, in 1929. At a young age, she accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized in Resley’s Creek—affectionately known as “Restless Creek”—in Comanche County. God graciously blessed Ramona with 97 beautiful years on this earth.

Born in the first year of the Great Depression, Ramona’s childhood instilled in her a deep resilience and a strong work ethic. She helped her family by picking cotton on their farm and working diligently with her hands. During her years at Lamkin High School, she excelled as an outstanding basketball player and discovered her love for home economics. At just 14 years old, Ramona moved out of her family home and into an old soda shop in Carlton, Texas. It was there that she met the love of her life, Z. L. “Doc” Sharp.

Ramona and Doc were married for 57 wonderful years before Doc went home to his Savior in 2003. Their love story began when Doc returned home on leave from the U.S. Navy during World War II—it was love at first sight. After marrying, they first made their home in Crane, Texas, and later moved to Andrews, Texas.

In Andrews, Ramona worked as the executive secretary to the principal at Devonian Elementary School until her retirement. She and Doc were longtime residents of Andrews and were faithful members of Means Memorial United Methodist Church before making their church home in Midland, Texas. In Midland, they also enjoyed fellowship through their involvement with the International Right of Way Association. Later in life, Ramona became a member of the Red Hat Society, a group that brought her much joy and companionship.

Throughout their lives, Ramona and Doc gathered many cherished friends. They loved playing bridge, attending socials, and sharing laughter and fellowship with those around them. In 2021, Ramona moved to Gainesville, Texas, to live with her daughter, son‑in‑law, and beloved granddaughter. Known affectionately as “Momo,” she became a treasured part of their daily life. She was warmly embraced by Freedom Church Denton, where she was continually surrounded by compassion and prayer. In her final years, she was faithfully lifted up in prayer by the women and men of Denton Freedom House, both Staff and Residents, who considered it a privilege to walk beside her on her journey home.

Ramona was preceded in death by her father, John Harrison Ellenburg of Hamilton, Texas; her mother, Lela Hall Ellenburg, also of Hamilton; her sister, Delona Fishel of Abilene, Texas; and her brother, Roy Ellenburg of Carlton, Texas.

She is survived by her daughter and son‑in‑law, Nancy and Doug Wright, and her granddaughter, Kaelyne Wright.

Ramona’s viewing will be held at George J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. A private family burial will take place at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas.
