Violet Wolfe was peacefully called home to be with her Lord on June 23, 2025, in Decatur, Texas at the age of 97.
Born on February 17, 1928, in Carter County, Kentucky, Violet was the third of twelve children born to Irdle and Bethel Forrest James. She spent her early years helping in her father’s tobacco fields and caring for her younger siblings—a role that shaped her lifelong devotion to family.
In 1948, Violet married Tom Wolfe, and together they raised five children in Gainesville, Texas. A devoted wife and mother, Violet poured her life into her family. She was a woman of deep faith, reading her Bible daily and living by the scriptures she held dear. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman—hardworking, wise, nurturing, and strong.
Violet was a gifted homemaker, known for her delicious home-cooked meals and the warm, welcoming home she maintained. She cherished time with children—her own and many others. As Mama and later as Memaw, she filled her home with laughter, play, and stories of the sweet and funny things her grandchildren said and did.
Her love extended into everything she touched. She enjoyed sewing baby blankets, clothes, and keepsakes for her family. Her garden always bloomed with vibrant flowers and fresh vegetables, which she joyfully shared. She also found joy in games like Skip-Bo and in working jigsaw puzzles—her treasured pastime in her later years.
Violet’s life was one of unwavering love, quiet strength, and faithful service. Her family and friends were the blessed recipients of her kindness, generosity, and wisdom. Though we grieve her loss, we rejoice in knowing she is reunited with loved ones in Heaven and in the arms of Jesus, whom she loved and served faithfully.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 73 years, Tom Wolfe; daughter, Linda K. Smith; granddaughter, Brooke Sheree Trammell; great-grandson, Lucas Garrett Daniels; siblings Verlin James, Jane Culver, Billy James, Norma Ritter, Joy Brinker; and many dear friends.
Violet is survived by her children: L.T. “Tommy” Wolfe (Marti) of New Castle, CO; Donna Buttrill of Melissa, TX; Sam Wolfe (Janna) of Bowie, TX; and Wendy Trammell (Randy) of Decatur, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Brenda Morrow (Tim), Melissa Hobson (Harlan), Jake Wolfe, Tyler Wolfe, Misty Terry (Simon), Kayli Daniels (Johnny), Eric Gaston (Brittany), Heath Wolfe, Seth Wolfe (Jordan), Becca Dunn (Trey), Brittney Yoder (Josh), and Stacey Ingham (John); 28 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and siblings: Evelyn Parker, Vernon James, Margie Menix, Genny Cottrill, Doreata Albright, and Jack James; as well as sister-in-law Helen Rogers, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Violet’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM, with a visitation beginning at 1:15 PM, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, TX.
