Mass of Christian burial will be held for Charles Anton Stoffels, 82, in St. Peter’s Centennial Hall in Lindsay on Wednesday, March 2, at 10:00 AM with Father Raymond McDaniel, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. Grandsons will be pallbearers and mass servers.
Charles passed away peacefully in the Renaissance Care Center in Gainesville on Sunday, February 27, 2011, surrounded by his family.
Charles was born northwest of Lindsay, in the Van Slyke Community on June 15, 1928, to Henry and Sophie Angerer Stoffels. He grew up on several farms in the Lindsay/Muenster area as his father rented from local land owners. He attended school at Hayes School, Van Slyke School, and Sacred Heart Catholic School.
On November 25, 1952, Charles married Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Bengfort in St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsay. Afterward he farmed and carpentered in Cooke County until joining the Carpenters’ Union in Denton. He worked on numerous high rise buildings in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Denton. He retired from carpentering in 1990.
Charles enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, farming and livestock, biking, and hiking. He loved whistling and even recorded a CD titled “The Whistler”. Charles was a member of the St. Peter’s Society and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.
Charles is survived by his wife, Betty, daughters and sons-in-law Charlotte and Bill Winter and Katie and Bill Felderhoff, sons and daughters-in-law Randy and Janice Stoffels, Bob and Pauline Stoffels, Tim and Sabrina Stoffels, and Stan and Stephanie Stoffels.
Charles is also survived by grandchildren Jeff and Jessica Sicking and great-grandson William; Justin Sicking; Kim and Jay Ruebel and great-granddaughters Gracie and Norah; Kassie and Billy Carnley and great-granddaughter Addyson; Stephanie Stoffels; Chad Stoffels; Cheryl and Luke Vaughan and great-granddaughter Camille; Kelli Stoffels; Emily Stoffels; Sarah Stoffels; Savannah Stoffels; Sabrina Stoffels; Sean Stoffels; Keri and Shay Crawford and great-grandchildren Carson and Brailynn; Brad Felderhoff; Chelsea Felderhoff; Jenna Felderhoff; and Billy Felderhoff, Jr.
Also surviving Charles and sisters and brothers-in-law Lucy Westbrook; Emma and Richard White; Clara and Erwin Fuhrmann; and brother William (Bill) Stoffels. He also has numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters-in-law Peter and Catherine (Bengfort) Stoffels, Henry and Mary (Fuhrmann) Stoffels, and Joy (Woodall) Stoffels; and sisters and brothers-in-law Sarah and Frank DeFrance and Rose Marie and Hubert Schrodes. Siblings that died during infancy were Helen, Charles Albert, and Angelina Annie Stoffels.
A Rosary and visitation will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. Donations may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 148, Lindsay, TX 76250 or Home Hospice of Cooke County, P.O. Box 936, Gainesville, TX 76240.
